If you've seen the famous "ten-step Korean skincare routine," you might think Korean skincare means a shelf full of bottles. It doesn't have to. Plenty of people use a much shorter routine on a normal day, and the basic idea is easy to copy: clean skin, then layer products from the thinnest to the thickest.

Below is a four-step routine for beginners, with two or three example products for each step. Every example is sold on Amazon US, and we checked each listing ourselves on October 14, 2026. None of this is medical advice, and we don't promise results; if you have a skin condition, talk to a dermatologist first.

Step 1: Cleanser

Start with a face wash that leaves your skin feeling clean but not tight. Many Korean cleansers are described as low pH, which means the formula is closer to skin's own slightly acidic level than a classic soap. Wash with lukewarm water, massage for about half a minute and rinse well.

Two common picks: the COSRX Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser, a clear gel in a 150 ml tube that the listing describes as pH balanced with tea tree oil and BHA, and the Round Lab 1025 Dokdo Cleanser, a low-pH foam cleanser in a 150 ml tube that makes a soft lather. If you wear a lot of makeup, Korean routines often add an oil cleanser first, which is called double cleansing. As a beginner you can skip it on days without makeup.

Step 2: Toner

In Korea, toner usually means a watery liquid that adds the first light layer after washing, not a stinging astringent. Pour a little into your palm and pat it in, or wipe it on with a cotton pad.

The Round Lab 1025 Dokdo Toner is a light, water-type toner in a 200 ml bottle, listed as sold by ROUNDLAB OFFICIAL. Beauty of Joseon Ginseng Essence Water is a little in between a toner and an essence, with ginseng root water and niacinamide named on the current brand page. Check the ingredient list on the exact bottle you buy. If you want to save time, toner pads do this step in one wipe; see our toner pad and essence guide.

Step 3: Serum

A serum is a light, concentrated layer that goes on after toner. One is enough. Use a few drops or one or two pumps and pat them in before moving on.

The Torriden DIVE-IN Serum is a watery serum in a 50 ml bottle with five types of hyaluronic acid and panthenol; the listing says it is vegan, fragrance-free and alcohol-free. The innisfree Green Tea Seed Hyaluronic Serum is built around green tea, with encapsulated hyaluronic acid and niacinamide, and innisfree suggests two or three pumps after toner, morning and night.

Step 4: Moisturizer

Finish with a cream to seal in the layers underneath. The texture you like depends on your skin and the season: lighter in summer, richer in winter.

For a lighter feel, the COSRX Hyaluronic Acid Intensive Cream comes in a 100 g jar and is described as non-oily. For something richer, the ETUDE SoonJung 2x Barrier Repair Cream is from ETUDE's line for sensitive skin, with panthenol and madecassoside and no synthetic fragrance, mineral oil or parabens, per its listing. The Dr.Jart+ Ceramidin cream names five ceramides, panthenol and glycerin; this listing is a pack of two 50 ml containers.

Morning, night and a few rules

Use the same four steps morning and night. In the morning, add sunscreen as the very last step. Gatgooun doesn't cover sunscreen picks, so choose one that follows the rules where you live. At night you can stop after moisturizer.

Start slowly. Add one new product at a time and give it a couple of weeks before you add the next, so you know what works for you. Patch test anything new on a small area, like the side of your neck, for a day or two.

Read ingredient lists if you know you react to fragrance, essential oils or acids. And don't worry about the extras you see online, such as essences, ampoules, sheet masks and sleeping masks. They're fun to add later, once the basic four steps feel like a habit.
